[May 15, 2012] With ink jet presses and wide-format machines taking center stage in Halls 4, 5, 8a, 8b, and 9 at drupa 2012, exhibitors were also eager to display new ink products and technology for the commercial printing market. A handful of familiar faces trumpeted next-generation inks to take advantage of the offset to digital transition and expand digital production printing into new applications.

On April 17, Ricoh announced additions to an existing toner manufacturing plant, while Print-Rite issued a press release with details of a new North American subsidiary.

[May 1, 2012] When Lexmark introduced the C730 and X730 series of color laser printers and MFPs in 2009, the firm rationalized its toner cartridge offerings so that all of the new workgroup color laser models used the same supplies. With the release of the C740 and X740 series on April 2, Lexmark reverted back to its previous strategy of using unique SKUs for its single-function printers and MFPs, even though all of the models are based on the same engine platform.

[April 24, 2012] On April 16, Mohawk officially unveiled a new brand, Web site, and promotion campaign that is designed to transform the family-owned New York-based paper manufacturer into a company that is equipped to succeed in today’s digital world. As the largest privately owned fine paper company in North America, Mohawk must innovate to survive in an economy and market environment wrought with uncertainty. Mohawk is taking on this charge by reducing cost bases, improving the customer experience, and creating new and innovative revenue streams.

[April 17, 2012] Until recently, Dell’s ink jet strategy was firmly focused on consumers, to the point of sticking with black and multicolor tanks rather than one tank per color like the firm’s supplier Lexmark to reduce the number of user interventions for home and home office users. With the introduction of the V725w, however, Dell is targeting the small-office/home-office (SOHO) market and has configured this new ink jet MFP accordingly—most notably with individual ink tanks.

[April 10, 2012] On April 3, Xerox announced two new MFPs based on the firm’s solid ink technology. The ColorQube 8700 and 8900 replace the existing Phaser 8560MFP series and 8860MFP, and like the earlier units, different supplies SKUs for the two products effectively position each model for different usage.
